Mission

Kanopy Dance Theatre, Inc. was organized to: "promote, encourage, and increase the public's knowledge of and appreciation for the arts, including the art of dance; to coordinate and provide services to the arts to foster their growth and practice; and, to engage in activities relating to the aforementioned purposes." (Articles of Incorporation, 1976)

Kanopy's Vision includes creating artistic excellence in performing dance repertoire, new works, and historically significant dance by commissioning or accepting commissions; supporting and producing local, national and international collaborations; touring; training and hiring exceptional artists; building and broadening community outreach educational opportunities; offering affordable rehearsal and classroom space for other dance and movement groups in our area; and enhancing the quality of life for all in our community.

Performances by Kanopy's professional company and its school; its outreach programs and studio reach thousands of persons annually. Kanopy encourages development of a vibrant Arts community and is proud to be thriving as an independent modern dance company.

Kanopy�s annual budget facilitates its season of dance and administers its school and studio. Ticket sales and tuitions are only a portion of the necessary resources. Kanopy is supported in part by the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin, National Endowment for the Arts, Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission, Madison Arts Commission, Madison Community Fndn., The Overture Fndn., Pleasant T. Rowland Fndn., Alliant Energy, Maritz Inc., and support from individual donors.
