Summer Dance Intensive and Classes 2026June 29-August 8, 2026Schedule and RegistrationDANCE INTENSIVES - dance with world acclaimed guest artists from around the country - along-side Kanopy’s Artistic Directors and Faculty. Deepen your dance technique and artistry. Engage in creative activities. Learn, and learn about, these modern dance techniques, their different foundations toward the physical art of movement, their beginnings, and how artists through time create and find inspiration. Curriculum: Modern (Graham, Humphrey, Hawkins, Horton, Sokolow, Limon, Cunningham) Techniques, Ballet, Contemporary, Masterwork Repertory, Choreography & Improvisation; Stretch/Strength, Pointe, Pre-Pointe, Injury prevention/health, mentoring, journaling. In addition, MASTER ARTIST WORKSHOP I in Límon technique & Lìmon repertory (Lìmon’s iconic “Choreographic Offering”), with Daniel Fetecua-Soto, former principal dancer with Límon Dance Company, NYC, will be offered for Intermediate and Advanced Dancers. MASTER ARTIST WORKSHOP II will be advanced Lìmon technique & Lìmon based contemporary repertory, with Colin Connor, former artistic director with the Límon Dance Company, for advanced dancers. Both required for Kanopy2 dancers. WEEKLY CLASSES: Beginning dancers ages 5-7: Learn modern and ballet dance skills, creative exploration, learn to work as a group to create their very own dances. Adult Beginning and Continuing dancers: For students new to dance, returning, or continuing. Learn in a supportive environment, developing technique, musicality, and artistry. PLACEMENT: Kanopy Academy Students enroll as follows: Beginning Intensive = Level 2-3; Intermediate Intensive = Level 4-5; Advanced Intensive = Level 5-6, K2. Please inquire about proper level, contact us at [email protected]. Placement adjustments may be made the first day for Intermediate and Advanced Intensive students. TUITION: Registration and Tuition Payment are required to secure a place in the Intensives and Classes. Space is limited, and is on a first come, first serve basis. Enrollment is ongoing through the summer subject to availability. Intensives and Classes have a payment plan option you may choose during registration process. No refunds. WELCOME: Our home is 329 West Mifflin St., next to Madison Opera Center and across from Overture Parking Ramp. Arrival / Departure: 10-15 minutes prior to class start time and 10-15 minutes after class end time. What you will need: Dancers will need water bottle, lunch and snacks. Dance attire required. Barefoot for most classes, ballet slippers required for ballet, hair secured off face, no large jewelry (for safety reasons). Journal to write and draw in. Faculty: Robert E. Master Artist Workshops I & II
Workshop I: Advanced & Intermediate Dancers Límon Technique & Repertory with Daniel Fetecua-Soto, former principal dancer, Límon Dance Company in New York City. For ages 11-adult. (Level 4, 5, 6, K2, professional) There will be an informal showing Saturday Aug 1 from 4:30-5:15pm for Company dancers, Kanopy 2 and workshop students. Workshop students may ask for permission to observe afternoon company rehearsals.
Workshop & afternoon rehearsals are highly recommended for Kanopy 2 dancers. Daniel Fetecua-Soto will be staging Jóse Límon’s masterwork “Suite from Choreographic Offering” for Kanopy’s October 2026 show at the Overture Center.
Workshop II: Advanced Dancers Límon Technique & Límon Based Contemporary Repertory with Colin Connor, former artistic director, Límon Dance Company in New York City. For ages 13-adult. (Level 5, 6, K2, professional) There will be an informal showing Saturday Aug 8 from 4:30-5:15pm for Company dancers, Kanopy 2 and workshop students. About Guest Artists Workshop I: Daniel Fetecua Soto, A New York based Colombian dancer, choreographer, educator and producer, Fetecua was soloist member of the Limón Dance Company for ten years, (2006-2016), dancing lead roles in Jose Limón’s master pieces and has appeared as guest artist in Pina Bausch’s “Rite of Spring” and “Tannhäuser”. Fetecua is a master teacher of the Limón technique, reconstructor of Limón’s repertory and Director of the Limón Professional Trainee Program. He is the founder and artistic director of two dance companies: Pajarillo Pinta’o, a dance company that preserves and promotes the Columbian traditional dances through dance performance, workshops and classes; and D-Moves, a contemporary dance project that combines Columbian traditions, Modern Dance and German TanzTheatre. Fetecua is a longtime collaborator of Columbian composer and musician Pablo Mayor. Together, they have created Amalgama and El Barrio Project, and the educational residency Cumbia for Kids/Cumbia for All. Since 2008, Fetecua has worked with Native Choreographer Daystar/Rosalie Jones for her work “Wolf: A Transformation”, from whom Fetecua has the rights to the piece for its performance, preservation and promotion. Fetecua is a member of Movement Migration and international collective of seasoned dance artists directed by Kim Jones. He is the producer and artistic director of Latitudes Dance Festival, a NYC based platform that promotes and presents Latin American and Indigenous companies and choreographers from around the world. His most recent project, C.A.V.E.S with world renowned dancer Blakeley White-McGuire, is touring internationally in collaboration with local dance companies and artists. Fetecua is currently resident choreographer and board member of ID Studio Theatre a not-for-profit organization led by Colombian actor German Jaramillo. Fetecua is also a resident choreographer at Teatro SEA directed by Manuel Moran for which he has choreographed “Sueno”, a Caribbean take on Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream”, and “La Gloria: A Latin Cabaret”. He won a HOLA award for Best Choreography and an ATI award for “The Crazy Adventures of Don Quixote”.  Workshop II: Colin Connor is the award-winning choreographer of over sixty works and was the Artistic Director of the American legacy Limón Dance Company from 2016 to 2020. His choreographies have been presented across the Americas, Europe and Africa, including New York’s Joyce Theater, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, the Momment’Homme Festival in Montreal, The Holland Festival, and the Festival Internacional de Danza Contemporanea in Mexico. He was the winner of Sarasota Ballet’s International Choreography Competition, Charleston Ballet Theatre’s Fountainhead Choreography Competition, best experimental film at the California Womens’ Film Festival and best music video at Silent River Film Festival. His work draws from a large range of influences – musical, literary, social and scientific – all used to bring attention to the communicative power of the human body. Major collaborations include: Solea and the Winds, a radical Contemporary / Flamenco evening which toured to critical acclaim for three years across Europe and Secondhand Sofa with bluegrass band The Biscuit Boys for the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. He has mounted works on the Limón Dance Company, Atlanta Ballet, Finland’s Damaru Dance Company, Hartford Ballet, The Juilliard School, Richmond Ballet, the Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre, Kanopy Dance Company, sjDANCEco and Island Moving Company among many others. As Limón’s Artistic Director he revitalized the Company and School and nurtured a new generation of leaders in the tradition. Mr.Connor has been on the faculty of The Juilliard School, NYU, City College of New York, and the California Institute for the Arts, where he is a Professor Emeritus. He has also taught and choreographed at many major international dance centers including Rotterdamse Dansacademie, London’s The Place, Israel’s Rubin Academy, and Dresden’s Palluca Schule. colinconnor.org About José Limón and the Limón Dance CompanyFounded in 1946 by José Limón and Doris Humphrey, the Limón Dance Company has been at the vanguard of American Modern dance since its inception and is considered one of the world’s greatest dance companies. Choreographer and dancer José Limón is credited with creating one of the world’s most important and enduring dance legacies— an art form responsible for the creation, growth and support of modern dance in this country. Acclaimed for its dramatic expression, technical mastery and expansive, yet nuanced movement, the Limón Dance Company illustrates the timelessness of José Limón’s work and vision. The Company’s repertory, which includes classic works in addition to new commissions from contemporary choreographers, possesses an unparalleled breadth and creates unique experiences for audiences around the world. José Limón was one of the most prominent American choreographers in modern dance. His powerful choreography often focused on human drama, incorporating themes from literature, history or religion. Throughout his career, Limón worked to change the image of the male in dance and bring it to a new stature and recognition. Born in 1908 in Culiacan, Mexico, Limón moved to the United States with his family when he was seven years old. He became interested in dance at the age of twenty, after moving to New York City to study painting. He began his studies with pioneer modern dancers Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman, and was soon invited to join their company. In 1946 he founded his own company. Limón is best known for his masterpiece, The Moor's Pavane, based on Shakespeare's “Othello.” He choreographed over seventy-four other works, including The Traitor, The Exiles, There is a Time, Chaconne, Emperor Jones, Carlota, Dances for Isadora, and The Unsung. José Limón died on December 2, 1972. Today, the José Limón Dance Foundation continues his work through two entities: the Limón Dance Company, an international touring repertory company, and the Limón Institute, an educational and archival resource organization.
