DANCE INTENSIVES - dance with world acclaimed guest artists from around the country - along-side Kanopy’s Artistic Directors and Faculty. Deepen your dance technique and artistry. Engage in creative activities. Learn, and learn about, these modern dance techniques, their different foundations toward the physical art of movement, their beginnings, and how artists through time create and find inspiration. Curriculum: Modern (Graham, Humphrey, Hawkins, Horton, Sokolow, Limon, Cunningham) Techniques, Ballet, Contemporary, Masterwork Repertory, Choreography & Improvisation; Stretch/Strength, Pointe, Pre-Pointe, Injury prevention/health, mentoring, journaling.

In addition, GUEST ARTIST MASTER WORKSHOPS I & II with Blakeley White-McGuire, former Martha Graham Dance Company Principal Dancer, and Daniel Fetecua Soto, former Soloist, Limon Dance Company, NYC will be offered for Intermediate and Advanced Dancers.

WEEKLY CLASSES: Beginning dancers ages 6-8: Learn modern and ballet dance skills, creative exploration, learn to work as a group to create their very own dances.

Adult Beginning and Continuing dancers: For students new to dance, returning, or continuing. Learn in a supportive environment, developing technique, musicality, and artistry.

PLACEMENT: Kanopy Academy Students enroll as follows: Beginning Intensive = Level 2-3; Intermediate Intensive = Level 4-5; Advanced Intensive = Level 5-6, K2. Please inquire about proper level, contact us at [email protected]. Placement adjustments may be made the first day for Intermediate and Advanced Intensive students.

TUITION: Registration and Tuition Payment are required to secure a place in the Intensives and Classes. Space is limited, and is on a first come, first serve basis. Enrollment is ongoing through the summer subject to availability. Intensives and Classes have a payment plan option you may choose during registration process. No refunds.

WELCOME:
Our home is 329 West Mifflin St., next to Madison Opera Center and across from Overture Parking Ramp. Arrival / Departure: 10-15 minutes prior to class start time and 10-15 minutes after class end time.

What you will need:
Dancers will need water bottle, lunch and snacks. Dance attire required. Barefoot for most classes, ballet slippers required for ballet, hair secured off face, no large jewelry (for safety reasons). Journal to write and draw in.

Guest Artist Master Workshops I & II

June 24-July 6, 2024

Workshop I - June 24-29, 2024: Jose Limón Technique & Repertory with Daniel Fetecua Soto, former Principal Dancer with the Limón Dance Company in New York City.

Workshop II - July 1-6, 2024: Martha Graham Technique & Repertory with Blakeley White-McGuire, former Principal Dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company in New York City.

For Advanced and Intermediate dancers, ages 13-adult. (Level 4, 5, 6, K2)

Daniel Fetecua Soto

Daniel Fetecua Soto is from Bogotá, Colombia and holds a BFA from Folkwang-University of the Arts in Germany. He has appeared as guest artist in Pina Bausch’s masterpieces, Rite of Spring and Tannhäuser and was a soloist member of the Limon Dance Company for ten years (2006-2016), dancing principal roles in Jose Limon’s master pieces. Daniel has also danced works by Jiry Kilian, Susane Linke, and Doris Humphrey, among others. Daniel currently serves as a Master Teacher of the Limón technique, reconstructor of Limon’s repertory, and as a faculty member of the Limon Institute and Limón4Kids program. He is the Founder and Artistic Director Pajarillo Pinta’o, a dance company that preserves and promotes Colombian traditional dance, and D-Moves, a contemporary dance project that combines Colombian traditions, Modern Dance and German TanzTheater. Along with longtime collaborator – Colombian composer and musician Pablo Mayor – Daniel created “Amalgama”, “El Barrio Project” and the educational residency Cumbia For Kids/Cumbia For All. Since 2008, he has worked with Native-Choreographer Rosalie Jones/Day Star for her work “Wolf: A Transformation”, from whom Daniel has the rights to the piece for the performance, preservation, and promotion. Daniel is a resident choreographer of ID Studio Theatre and Teatro SEA, is an adjunct dance faculty member at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and currently serves as a Spanish-language teaching artist for Battery Dance and is the producer and artistic director of LATITUDES DANCE FESTIVAL, a new NYC based platform to promote and present Latin American companies and choreographers from around the world. Awards include HOLA award for Best Choreography, NALAC and Harlem Stage fund for new work.

Blakeley White-McGuire

Blakeley White-McGuire, born and raised in South Louisiana, U.S.A., is a New York-based dancer/choreographer/writer/educator and interdisciplinary artist critically acclaimed as a former Principal dancer and present official Regisseur of repertory with the Martha Graham Dance Company. Her current creative process creates contemporary dance theater and site-specific performative works through movement research including with Movement Migration and C.A.V.E.S. Project Entre El Cuerpo y La Naturaleza, an international collaborative interrogating the relationship between art, nature, and the human body. Her productions have been commissioned by several presenters including the Dancing Human Rights Festival, Oxford, UK; The Museum of Arts and Design, New York, USA Jacob’s Pillow’s INSIDE/ OUT, USA; American Dance Festival, USA; Movement Migration (International) and Ballet Metropolitano, Colombia, SA. Blakeley is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Contemporary Dance at Hunter College and The Ailey/Fordham Professional Division and is the author of several published works including her first book, “The Martha Graham Dance Company: House of the Pelvic Truth”.


Advanced & intermediate dancers (age 13-adult) will have an accelerated in-depth study in Jose Limón Technique and Repertory (workshop I) and Graham Technique and Repertory (workshop II). Informal time taken for Q&A about the artist, being a dancer, careers in dance, and more. There will be an informal showing Saturday June 29 (workshop I) and July 6 (workshop II) with Kanopy Dance Company and Workshop students TBA. Workshop students with permission from Kanopy Directors may observe rehearsal process with Kanopy Dance Company and guest artist.
